The Karnataka governmenton Mondaytransferredthe state DIG Prisons D RoopaMoudgileven as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah insisted that It is an administrative process; it is not necessary to disclose everything to the media.”
But the shifting of the feisty officer to the Traffic department just a week after she exposed corrupt activities in the Bangalore jail and accused Sasikala Natarajan of bribing top prison officials for undue favours has certainly raised eyebrows.
Last week, DIG Roopa had exposed corrupt activities carried out in the city central jail, claiming that DGP Sathyanarayana Rao and other senior officers had been bribed to the tune of Rs 2 crore to provide special treatment to Sasikala. As a reward for bribing the prison authorities from Rao to jail warden, Sasikala gets special menu daily, cooked by special chefs in a special kitchen near the women’s cell, Roopa had said in the report.Roopa also said drugs were being distributed to the inmates through various means and select prisoners were given special facilities.
Then on Saturday, Roopa signalled she cannot be silenced by submitting a report charging that CCTV recordings of VIP treatment given to Sasikala to buttress her charge that the AIADMK leader had paid bribe for VVIP treatment seem to have gone missing. In her second report, she has highlighted the state of affairs pertaining to maintenance of the central prison.
At that time, Siddaramaiah said he has ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter. He had assured that strict action would be taken against the guilty, while taking cognizance of allegations of irregularities in the Bengaluru central prison.
On the one hand, where Rao categorically denied all the charges, Roopa, on the other, maintained her stand, saying that she has no issue with an inquiry taking place into it.
On July 14, Roopa had also said she is being unnecessarily targeted and singled out for exposing irregularities at the Parappana Agrahara Central prison.
