In a bid to be funny, our Bollywood award hosts can cross the line sometimes. So it was with Karan Johar at the IIFA Awards last night when, as host of the awards function, he raked up the issue of nepotism, which had rocked the film industry in the first half of 2017. The issue had come up after a sensational episode ofKoffee With Karanfeaturing Kangana Ranaut.
Now, Karan and Saif Ali Khan co-hosted the awards function at the MetLife Stadium in New York last night. And when Varun Dhawan came on stage to receive his award for Best Actor In a Comic Role forDishoom, Saif quickly said, You’re here because of your father (David Dhawan). To which, Varun replied, Yes, and you are here because of your mummy (Sharmilla Tagore). Karan, who’s known for his wit, instantly joined them and said, Well, even I’m here because of my father (Yash Johar).
With all three hailing from film families, they shouted in unison, Nepotism rocks! But the joke didn’t end here. Varun, who’s a Karan protege, reminded him about a song from one of his films,Bole chudiyaan, bole Kangana’. And laughing at the joke, KJo added: Kangananaa hi bole toh achha hai… Kangana bahut bolti hai. Ouch!
The entire audience was shocked to see Karan take a dig at nepotism and his friend-turned-foe Kangana. But the question is, how will the Queen Bee respond to this? Will she stay quiet or will she begin yet another war of words? Watch this space.
